These large format cigarette cards of paintings by Arthur Wardle were issued by John Player in the 1930s. Arthur Wardle (1864-1949) was well known for his detailed paintings of dogs that perfectly capture the character of each breed. It is believed that he was self-taught and at the age of just 16 he had his first work accepted for exhibition at the Royal Academy in 1880, where over his lifetime he exhibited 113 works.
