In 1832 Dr. Henry Stephens invented an indelible 'blue-black writing fluid'... This resulted in the foundation of Stephens' Inks; a worldwide company that enjoyed over 150 years of success.
Advertising for this brand has developed a very strong following. This mid-sized, enamel example is particularly charming and has weathered beautifully. It was produced by Jordan Bilston in March 1940 and features the iconic 'ink splat' logo.
The condition is generally good; there are a couple of areas of enamel loss, mainly towards the lower, outer edges and the enamel has lost its sheen developing a warm yellowing to the once bright white background - in my opinion, this is an excellent example of where the piece is improved through ageing.
The sign measures 76cm high and 50.5cm wide. It retains it's original mounting holes and sits good and straight for easy hanging.
