Antique, circa 1868, French, fine woven silk panel. A superb, highly decorative piece, woven on a brocaded black silk taffeta ground and adorned with exquisitely detailed decoration featuring a horse and jockey, flags and the words 'Liberte Commerciale' A truly outstanding example of the weaver's art!
Made by the renowned, French silk weavers Tassinari & Chatel, for the Lyon based silks manufacturer C J Bonnett. (Founded in 1810, Bonnet was one of the largest manufacturers of French silks during the 19th & 20th centuries, they ceased manufacturing in 2001 and the factory is now a museum & heritage site)
Presented in what looks to be the original gilt edged mount and impressive, wood and gesso gilt frame, it is in good antique condition with a small area of very discreet damage just above the horse's hoof. The frame is structurally sound with signs of age and cosmetic wear, and the glass has been replaced with gallery grade acrylic.
