This is a vintage handmade Japanese silk nagajuban from the 1930s. The nagajuban is worn underneath a more elaborate kimono, essentially to keep it clean. Usually they are plain white silk or cotton, however this one is a bright explosion of colour and print. It features an art deco red and orange blossom print on a bright blue base, with a rich red silk lining. The unusual and ornate nature of this particular nagajuban suggests that it was made for someone wealthy with a strong sense of style. Blossoms are a symbolic flower in Japan, representing spring, a time of renewal and the fleeting nature of life. They are a celebration of life and nature and this is beautifully represented in this bright, stunning kimono. There are some small stains and fraying at the hem, otherwise this in very good condition for its age.
