This is a vintage handmade Japanese long kimono from the 1930s, made out of ro silk. Ro silk is created by leaving a space in the weft of the fabric when it is woven, resulting in the weave forming horizontal bands. This creates a lightweight silk fabric which was popular for summer kimonos. This kimono features a nadeshiko flower pattern; nadeshiko refers to a delicate flower, more specifically a pink frilled carnation. It also held a deeper symbolism, being used as a floral metaphor for the epitome of Japanese feminine beauty – demure, shy and innocent. The lady wearing this kimono in 1930s Japan was presenting herself as the ideal Japanese woman. This kimono is in fantastic condition, with only some slight discolouration on the white cotton ties and a couple small stains near the hem.
