his is a vintage handmade silk haori jacket from Japan, dating between the 1920s and 1930s. The haori is a hip or thigh length kimono-like jacket, worn open over a kosode, and worn in Japan since the Sengoku period. This haori features a purple, orange and yellow hana-kusudama, maple leaf, and ribbon design. The hana-kusudama (translating to medicine ball) is part of a long tradition in Japan, starting in the Heaian Period, when fragrant woods and herbs were placed in a small cloth bag, decorated with different blossoms and flowers. These were hung in the house on May 5th to ward off evil spirits and disease. They symbolised happiness and good health for all. The maple leaf from the Japanese maple tree also has a long tradition in Japanese art and culture. They are considered a symbol of grace, and are associated with peace and serenity of the world’s elements. Their name in Japanese, ‘kito’ translates to calm, rest, or at peace. This is a stunning haori jacket, in fantastic condition, and full of symbolism and the culture of Japan.
